Cephalosporin

Uses

Infections of the lower respiratory tract, skin and soft tissues. Septicaemia. Severe infections in immunocompromised patients. UTI and gonorrhoea.

How to take it

Adults: IM/IV: 1-2 gm every 8-12 hr, up to 2 gm every 4 hr or 4 gm every 8 hr for life-threatening infection. Children: > 6 mth: 150-200 mg/kg/day divided every 6-8 hr; max 12 gm/day. Bone Infection: IM/IV: Adults: 1-2 gm every 8-12 hr. Max: 6 gm/day. Children: > 6 mth: 50 mg/kg every 6-8 hr, not to exceed adult dose. Meningitis/ Septicaemia: IV: Adults: 3-4 gm every 8 hr. Children: > 6 mth: 50 mg/kg every 6-8 hr, not to exceed adult dose. IM: Inject deep IM into large muscle mass. IV: Inject direct IV over 3-5 min. Infuse intermittent infusion over 30 min. Reconstitution: IV: Reconstitute with SWFI as follows: For 500 mg vial: Add 5 mL, 1 gm vial: Add 10 mL, 2 gm vial: Add 20 mL. Shake…

Side effects

Pain at inj site, hypersensitivity reactions. Gl disturbances, eosinophilia, neutropenia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, rise in liver enzymes and blood urea. Positive Coomb's test.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: Renal impairment. Hypersensitivity to penicillins.

Advice

This medication is to be administered by injection or infusion only. Contact prescriber if there is burning/swelling/redness/pain at injection or infusion site or if there is rash, hives, itching, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, severe unrelieved diarrhoea, vaginal drainage or itching, mouth sores, blood/pus/mucus in stool or urine, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual chills or fever. Take sufficient amount of fluids (2-3 litres per day) to maintain hydration, unless restricted by the prescriber.
