Uses

Complicated SSTI, Community-acquired pneumonia.

How to take it

Adults: By IV infusion: 600mg over 60 minutes every 12 hours. Continue for 5-7 days in pneumonia and for 5-14 days in SSTI. Geriatrics: Same as adults. Children: Recommended durations of treatment are 5-14 days for cSSTI and 5-7 days for CAP. 12-18 yrs: Body wt: =33 kg: 600 mg over 60 mins every 12 hrs. Body wt <33kg: 12 mg/kg to a max of 400 mg over 60 mins every 8 hrs. =2yrs-<12 yrs: 12 mg/kg to a max of 400 mg over 60 mins every 8 hrs. Infants =2 mths-<2yrs: 8 mg/kg over 60 mins every 8 hrs. Neonates from birth-<2 mths: 6 mg/kg over 60 mins every 8 hrs. Administered by IV infusion over 1 hour. Side effects

Positive coombs test, rash, pruritus, GI upset, raised LFTs, fever, headache, dizziness, phlebitis, infusion site reactions, hypersensitivity reactions, pseudomembranous colitis, haemolytic anaemia.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to the cephalosporin class of antibacterials. Immediate and severe hypersensitivity (e.g. anaphylactic reaction) to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g. penicillins or carbapenems). Precautions: Non-severe hypersensitivity to other B-lactams, renal impairment (CrCl < 50ml/mins), history of seizures, pork risk class V and/or pneumonia requiring ventilation at presentation, pneumonia due to MRSA or requiring intensive care, immunocompromised, severe sepsis or septic shock, pneumonia, severe underlying lung disease.
