About Dorzolamide

Miotic, Antiglaucoma Preps

Uses

Ocular hypertension and open angle glaucoma, pseudo-exfoliative glaucoma either as adjunct to beta-blocker or used alone in patients unresponsive to beta-blockers or if beta-blockers contra-indicated.

How to take it

Adults: Monotherapy 1 drop three times daily. Adjunct therapy, 1 drop twice daily. Children: Not recommended.

Side effects

Ocular burning, stinging and itching, blurred vision, conjunctivitis, superficial punctate keratitis, eyelid inflammation and crusting, anterior uveitis, transient myopia, corneal oedema, iridocyclitis, headache, dizziness, paraesthesia, asthaenia, sinusitis, rhinitis, nausea, hypersensitivity reactions, bitter taste, epistaxis, urolithiasis, local irritation, nausea, fatigue, tearing.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Severe renal impairment or hyperchloraemic acidosis. Precautions: Hepatic impairment; systemic absorption follows topical application; history of renal calculi; chronic corneal defects, history of intraocular surgery. Closed angle glaucoma, sulphonamide hypersensitivity. Remove soft contact lenses; wait 15 min before reinserting.

Advice

Wash hands properly before use. Remove contact lenses before use. Wait 15 minutes before reinserting. To instill medication into eyes, tilt head back, look upward, instill drops into the eye. Close eye and roll eyeball in all directions. Do not blink for 30 seconds. Apply gentle pressure to inner corner of eye for 30 seconds. Contact prescriber if there is eye pain; eye infection; redness, burning, watering, puffiness around eyes; changes in vision; unusual reaction; no improvement or worsening of condition. Avoid touching tip of applicator with eye. Do not share medication with anyone else. Wait 5 minutes before instilling any other medication.

Interactions with Dorzolamide

Leave interval of 10 min if using other ophthalmic preps. Oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.
