About Carbimazole

Thyroid Therapy

Uses

Thyrotoxicosis.

How to take it

Adults: Initially, 20-60 mg daily in two or three divided doses until patient is euthyroid. Maintenance, 5-15 mg daily for 6-18 mth. Alternatively, continue with 20-60 mg daily and supplemental thyroxine 50-150 mcg daily for 6-18 mth. Children: Initially, 5-15 mg daily in divided doses.

Side effects

Rashes, nausea, headache, GI upset, hepatic disorders, skin reactions, arthralgia. Bone marrow depression.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Tracheal obstruction. Severe blood disorders. Severe hepatic impairment. Precautions: Warn patients to inform doctor if sore throat, mouth ulcers, bruising, fever, malaise or non-specific illness develops. Mild to moderate hepatic impairment, intrathoracic goitre. Elderly.

Advice

Take before or after meals. Swallow with a full glass of water. Take at the same time each day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next dose, then take both doses together. Inform prescriber about sore throats and mouth ulcers.

Interactions with Carbimazole

Anticoagulants, digoxin, theophylline, radio-iodine, myelosuppressants.
