About Glipizide
Hypoglycaemic excluding Insulin
Uses
Type II diabetes.
How to take it
Adults: Initially 2.5 mg or 5 mg daily up to 30 min before breakfast or midday meal. Titrate by 2.5-5 mg at weekly intervals; max 20 mg daily. Doses above 15 mg daily should usually be divided. Children: Not recommended.
Side effects
Hypoglycaemia, GI upset, skin reactions. Rarely, hepatic function abnormalities, hepatic failure, hepatitis, jaundice, blood dyscrasias, transient visual disturbances.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Ketoacidosis, diabetic pre-coma and coma, severe renal or hepatic impairment. Porphyria. Concomitant miconazole treatment. Precautions: Mild to moderate renal or hepatic impairment, obesity. Adrenal or pituitary insufficiency. Surgery, severe trauma, infections, G6PD deficiency. Elderly.
Advice
Take 30 minutes before the first meal of the day. Take extended release tablet with breakfast. Do not chew or crush extended release tablets. Do not skip the meal after taking medication. Contact prescriber if there is severe or persistent hypoglycaemia, palpitations, sweaty palms, lightheadedness, extended vomiting or flu-like symptoms, skin rash, sore throat, easy bruising or bleeding or change in color of urine or stool. Carry candy or other simple sugars to treat mild hypoglycaemia. Carry identification card indicating diabetes. Avoid direct sunlight, use protective clothing, wear sunscreen and eyewear to prevent photosensitivity. Avoid alcohol. Do not take any other medication within 2…

NSAIDs, salicylates, phenylbutazone, oral anticoagulants, MAOIs, ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, chloramphenicol, azole antifungals, cimetidine, corticosteroids, diuretics, phenothiazines, quinolones, alcohol.
