Antihistamine, Systemic

Uses

Oral: Allergic conditions e.g. hay fever and other allergic rhinopathies, urticaria, pruritus, itching dermatoses, as adjuvant in acute and chronic eczema, contact dermatitis, drug eruptions, insect stings and bites. Inj: As adjuvant in anaphylactic or anaphylactoid shock and angioneurotic oedema; prevention & treatment of allergic & pseudo-allergic reactions; diagnostic use of antihistamine.

How to take it

INJECTION: Usually anaphylaxis or histamine reactions: Adults: 1 amp IV. Children: 0.025 mg/kg body-wt IV. ORAL: Allergic rhinitis: Adults: Clemastine fumarate 1.34 mg (1 mg base) twice daily, may be increased as needed. Max, 6 mg/day base. Children: 6->12 yrs: Syp: Clemastine fumarate 0.67 mg (0.5 mg base) twice daily, dosage may be increased as needed. Max, 3 mg/day base. =12 yrs: Syp/tab: Same as adults. Common cold/hay fever/upper respiratory allergies: Adults: Clemastine fumarate 1.34 mg (1 mg base) twice daily. Max, 2 mg/day base. Children: =12 yrs: Same as adults. Urticaria/angioedema: Adults: Clemastine fumarate 2.68 mg (2 mg base) twice daily. Max, 6 mg/day base. Children: 6- >12…

Side effects

Drowsiness, impaired reactions. Rarely dizziness, dry mouth, palpitations, Gl disturbances.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Porphyria. Precautions: BPH, urinary retention, bladder neck obstruction, glaucoma, stenosing peptic ulcer, pyloroduodenal obstruction. Risk of excitability in children.
