About Rabeprazole
Antipeptic Ulcerant
Uses
Active duodenal or active benign gastric ulcer, erosive or ulcerative GERD. Long term maintenance in GERD. Symptomatic non-erosive GERD. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Severe oesophagitis. With antibiotics for eradication of H. pylori in peptic ulcer disease.
How to take it
The dosage should be swallowed before food. Adults: Duodenal ulcer: 20 mg once daily in the morning for 4-8 wk. Gastric Ulcer: 20 mg once daily in the morning for 6-12 wk. GERD: 20 mg once daily in the morning for 4-8 wk. GERD maintenance: 20 mg or 10 mg once daily. Symptomatic GERD: 10 mg once daily for up to 4 wk. Then 10 mg once daily as required. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: Initially 60 mg once daily increasing if necessary to 120 mg daily (doses greater than 100 mg may require to be divided into a twice daily regimen). Continue treatment as long as required. Severe oesophagitis: 20 mg once daily for 8 wk, if necessary continue as maintenance treatment. Triple therapy vs H. pylori:…
Side effects
Headache, GI upset, rash, asthaenia, dry mouth.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Precautions: Exclude gastric or oesophageal malignancy before treatment. Severe hepatic impairment. Monitor patients on long term therapy.
Advice
Tab: Take with or without meals. Do not chew or crush tablet. Swallow whole with full glass of water. When used for the treatment of duodenal ulcers, take after a meal. When used for the eradication of H. pylori, take with the morning and evening meals. Cap: Take 30 min before meals. If there is difficulty in swallowing tablets , open the capsule and mix capsule contents with small amount of applesauce, fruit or vegetable based baby food or yoghurt. Swallow whole mixture. Complete the dose within 15 minutes.
