About Cephradine
Cephalosporin
Uses
Infections of respiratory and gastro-intestinal tracts and of skin and soft tissues, bones and joints. Septicaemia, endocarditis. Prophylaxis in surgery. UTI.
How to take it
ORAL: Adults: 1-2 gm daily in 2 or 4 divided doses; max 4 gm daily. Children: 25-50 mg/kg daily in 2 or 4 divided doses. Continue in all cases for 48-72 hr after patient is asymptomatic. Lower Respiratory Infection: Pneumonia: Adults: 500 mg every 6 hr or 1 gm every 12 hr. Children: > 9 mth: 25-50 mg/kg/day given every 6 hr or every 12 hr (up to adult dose). Otitis Media: Children: > 9 mth: 75-100 mg/kg/day given every 6 hr or every 12 hr. Max: 4 gm/day. Upper Respiratory Infection: Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis: Adults: 250 mg every 6 hr or 500 mg every 12 hr. Children: > 9 mth: 25-50 mg/kg/day given every 6 hr or every 12 hr (up to adult dose). Side effects
Hypersensitivity reactions. GI upset, pseudomembranous colitis.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: Penicillin hypersensitivity, renal impairment.
Advice
Take with or without meals. To reduce abdominal discomfort, take with meals. Take at regular intervals, as scheduled. Take missed dose as soon as possible unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose. Shake oral suspension well before measuring and use a calibrated measuring device to ensure accurate dose. To improve flavour of oral suspension, refrigerate it but do not freeze. Contact prescriber if there are changes in urinary pattern, severe unrelieved diarrhoea, unusual bruising or bleeding, persistent abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, vaginal itching, vaginal drainage, mouth sores, blood in stool or urine or if there is no improvement in condition.
