About Omalizumab

Uses

As add-on therapy in severe persistent allergic IgE mediated asthma. Chronic idiopathic urticaria.

How to take it

Adults: By SC inj. According to IgE levels; See product literature. Chronic idiopathic urticaria: SC inj: 150 or 300 mg every 4 wks. Children: Not recommended. For SC inj only. Doses > 150 mg should be divided over more than one site. May take 5-10 seconds to administer. Reconstitution: Reconstitute using SWFI and allow 15 to 20 mins (on average) for lyophilized product to dissolve. Draw 1.4 mL sterile water for injection into a 3 mL syringe with a 1 inch 18G needle. Place the vial upright and inject sterile water into vial using aseptic technique. Gently swirl upright vial for about 1 min to evenly wet powder. Don’t shake. Every 5 mins, gently swirl for 5 to 10 seconds until solution…

Side effects

Inj site reactions, headache, anaphylactic reactions, abdominal pain, pyrexia, serum sickness, Churg-Strauss syndrome, systemic eosinophilia, vasculitis (discontinue if severe).

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Acute asthma, acute bronchospasm, status asthmatic. Precautions: Hyper-immunoglobulin E syndrome, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, auto- immune disease, immune complex-mediated conditions, susceptibility to helminths infection, renal or hepatic impairment, diabetes. Withdraw concomitant corticosteroids slowly. Advise patients to report symptoms of serum sickness. Latex allergy.

Advice

If you are self-administering this medication, follow directions for reconstitution, administration, storage, needle and syringe disposal. Contact prescriber if there is difficulty in breathing, skin rash, chest pain, reaction at injection site (redness, swelling, itching). To relieve joint pain, bone pain or ear pain, consult prescriber for pain-killer. Regularly follow-up visits with prescriber.
