Uses

Potassium depletion especially during diuretic therapy.

How to take it

Adults: 20 mEq to 40 mEq daily in divided doses. Children: Not recommended.

Side effects

Rarely GI upset. Oesophageal or small bowel obstruction, ulceration (discontinue).

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Controlled studies shown no risk. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Severe renal impairment. Serum plasma concentration >5 mmol/litre. Acute dehydration, conditions predisposing to hyperkalaemia, gastric obstruction or ulceration (solid preparation), extensive tissue damage, metabolic acidosis. Precautions: Elderly. Mild moderate renal impairment, cardiac disease; monitor serum electrolytes, history of peptic ulcer, pregnancy, lactation.

Advice

Take oral forms with meals or after meals. Swallow whole with full glass of water or juice and stir before sipping slowly. Take any antacid 2 hours before or after taking potassium. Consult prescriber about increasing dietary potassium. Contact prescriber if there is tingling of hands or feet, unresolved nausea or vomiting, chest pain or palpitations, persistent abdominal pain, weakness, dizziness, confusion, acute muscle weakness or cramping, dark stool or blood in stools or easy bruising or unusual bleeding.
