Angiotensin-II Antagonist

Uses

Hypertension.

How to take it

Adults: Initially 600 mg once daily with food; max 800 mg once daily. Elderly: Over 75 yr, initially 300 mg once daily with food. Children: Not recommended.

Side effects

Dizziness, arthralgia, rhinitis, flatulence, hypertriglyceridaemia.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Severe hepatic impairment. Precautions: Renal impairment, mild to moderate hepatic impairment, sodium or volume depletion, hyperkalaemia. Monitor serum electrolytes.

Advice

Take as directed by prescriber. Change position slowly when climbing stairs and from lying or sitting to standing position. Maximum blood pressure response may not occur for 3 to 4 weeks. Contact prescriber if there is chest pain; palpitations; respiratory infection; cold symptoms; unusual cough; swelling of face, tongue, lips, hands, feet; changes in urinary pattern or extreme fatigue.

K+ sparing diuretics, K+ supplements, other antihypertensives, lithium, NSAIDs.
