Antihistamine, Systemic

Uses

Treatment of acute & chronic allergies & pruritus. Therapy for anaphylactic reactions, adjunctive to epinephrine & other standard measures after the acute manifestation have been controlled.

How to take it

Adults: Initially 4 mg three times daily, max: 32 mg/day. Children: 7-14 yr: 4 mg two-three times daily, max: 16 mg/day; 2-6 yr: Initially 2 mg two-three times daily, max: 12 mg/day.

Side effects

Sedation, transient sleepiness, dizziness, disturbed coordination, confusion, restlessness, excitation, nervousness, tremor, irritability, insomnia, paraesthesia, neuritis, convulsions, euphoria, hallucinations, hysteria, faintness, rash & oedema, excessive perspiration, urticaria, photosensitivity, acute labyrinthitis, blurred vision, diplopia, vertigo, tinnitus, hypotension, palpitation, tachycardia, extrasystoles, anaphylactic shock, haemolytic anaemia, leukopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, dryness of mouth, epigastric distress, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, jaundice, difficult micturition, urinary retention, early menses, dry nose & throat, thickening of…

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Acute asthma attack. Hypersensitivity. Angle-closure glaucoma. Stenosing peptic ulcer. Symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy. Bladder neck obstruction. Pyloroduodenal obstruction. Elderly, debilitated patients. Children below 2 years age. Precautions: History of bronchial asthma. Increased intraocular pressure. Hyperthyroidism. CV disease. Hypertension. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.

Advice

Take before meals. Contact prescriber if there is constant agitation, confusion, increased sleepiness, blurred vision, urinary pattern changes, sore throat, chest pain, palpitations, difficulty in breathing, expectoration or if there is no improvement or worsening of condition. Do not take other depressants, sleep-inducing medications, alcohol without consulting prescriber.
