Anaesthetic

Uses

Short-acting IV anaesthetic for induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia. For sedation of ventilated patients receiving intensive care.

How to take it

See literature. Before use, propofol should be shaken well. It may be administered undiluted by IV injection or infusion or diluted with dextrose 5% to not less than 2 mg/mL. Compatibility: Stable in D5LR, D5 1/4NS, D5 1/2NS, D5W, LR. Y-site administration: Drug to Drug IV Compatibility: Acyclovir, aztreonam, bumetanide, calcium gluconate, cephazolin, ceftriaxone, cimetidine, dexamethasone, diphenhydramine, dobutamine, dopamine, enalapril, epinephrine, esmolol, famotidine, fentanyl, fluconazole, furosemide, heparin, hydrocortisone, hydromorphone, imipenem, insulin regular, labetalol, lorazepam, magnesium sulphate, milrinone, nitroglycerin, nitroprusside, norepinephrine, ondansetron,…

Side effects

Hypotension, inj site burning, pain, apnoea, pruritus, rash, hyperlipidaemia, respiratory acidosis during weaning.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Children, severe cardiovascular and respiratory disease, epilepsy or seizures, hyperlipidaemia, hypotension, cesarean section deliveries. Precautions: Elderly, avoid abrupt discontinuation, avoid using with blood or blood products through the same IV catheter.
