Uses

Vitamin B6 deficiency state. Isoniazid-induced or penicillamine or hydralazine or cycloserine induced neuropathy. Idiopathic sideroblastic anaemia. Premenstrual syndrome.

How to take it

ORAL: Deficiency states: Adults: 20-50 mg up to 3 times daily for 3 wk. Isoniazid-induced or penicillamine or hydralazine or cycloserine induced neuropathy: Adults: Prophylaxis, 10 mg daily (or 20 mg daily if suitable product not available); treatment, 50 mg three times daily. Idiopathic sideroblastic anaemia: Adults: 100-400 mg daily in divided doses. Children: Not recommended. INJECTION: Dietary Deficiency states: Adults: IM or IV the dose is 10 to 20 mg daily for 3 wk. Deficiencies due to Isoniazid: Adults: 100 mg daily for 3 wk followed by a 30 mg maintenance dose daily. Children: Not recommended.

Side effects

Sensory neuropathy reported with high doses given for extended periods.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity. Precautions: Dependence and withdrawal may occur with daily doses of 200 mg or more. Uses in premenstrual syndrome has not been established scientifically.

Advice

Take with meals. Do not chew or crush tablets, swallow whole. Contact prescriber if there is persistent burning or pain at injection site. Do not exceed recommended dietary intake of vitamin B6 (vitamin B6 is present in red meat, bananas, potatoes, yeast, lima beans and whole grain cereals).
