About Cyclobenzaprine

Muscle Relaxant

Uses

Treatment of muscle spasm associated with acute painful musculoskeletal conditions.

How to take it

Do not use longer than 2-3 wk. Adults: Initial: 5 mg 3 times/day; may increase to 10 mg 3 times/day if needed. Elderly: 5 mg 3 times/day. Children: Not recommended.

Side effects

Drowsiness, dizziness, xerostomia.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Do not use concomitantly or within 14 days of MAO inhibitors; hyperthyroidism; congestive heart failure; arrhythmias; acute recovery phase of MI. Precautions: Cyclobenzaprine shares the toxic potentials of the tricyclic antidepressants and the usual precautions of tricyclic antidepressant therapy should be observed; use with caution in patients with urinary hesitancy, angle-closure glaucoma, hepatic impairment, or in the elderly.

Advice

Take as directed by prescriber. Contact prescriber if there is mental agitation, increased drowsiness, skin rash, chest pain, swelling of mouth or face, difficulty in speaking, blurred vision, ringing in ears. Avoid alcohol during therapy. Do not take OTC medications especially antidepressants, sedatives, pain medications without consulting prescriber. Urinate before taking medication.

Interactions with Cyclobenzaprine

CYP1A2 inhibitors. TCAD, anticholinergics. CNS depressants, MAO inhibitors, tramadol.
