About Vildagliptin
Hypoglycaemic excluding Insulin
Uses
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (in combination with metformin or with a sulfonylurea or with pioglitazone).
How to take it
Adults: In combination with metformin or pioglitazone, 50 mg twice daily; in combination with a sulfonylurea, 50 mg daily in the morning. Children: Not recommended.
Side effects
Bullous and exfoliative skin lesions. Monotherapy: Dizziness. With metformin: Tremor, headache, dizziness, nausea, hypoglycaemia. With a sulfonylurea: Tremor, headache, dizziness, asthaenia, hypoglycaemia. With a glitazone: Wt gain, peripheral oedema. With insulin: Headache, hypoglycaemia, chills, GI upset.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Diabetic ketoacidosis, hepatic impairment, CHF. Precautions: Elderly; monitor liver function; heart failure (avoid if moderate or severe). Moderate to severe renal impairment. Risk of pancreatitis; advise patient of symptoms, discontinue if suspected.
