About Ofloxacin, Inf/Oral
Quinolone
Uses
ORAL: UTI, infections of lower respiratory tract, skin and soft tissues, urethral and cervical gonorrhoea, non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis. INJECTION: Upper and lower UTI, infections of lower respiratory tract, skin and soft tissues, septicaemia.
How to take it
ORAL: Adults: Usually 200-400 mg once daily in morning or 400-800 mg daily as two divided dose at equal intervals for 5-10 days. Lower Respiratory Infection: Adults: 400 mg twice daily for 10 days. Urinary Tract Infection: Adults: Nongonococcal Cervicitis/Urethritis (C. trachomatis) or Mixed Infection of Urethra & Cervix (C. trachomatis & N. gonorrhoea): 300 mg every 12 hr for 7 days. Acute PID: 400 mg every 12 hr for 10-14 days. Uncomplicated Cystitis: 200 mg every 12 hr for 3 days (E. coli or K. pneumoniae) or for 7 days (other pathogens). Complicated UTI: 200 mg every 12 hr for 10 days. Prostatitis (E. coli): 300 mg every 12 hr for 6 wk. Gonorrhoea: Adults: 400 mg as a single dose. Skin…
Side effects
GI upset, skin reactions, CNS disturbances. Reports of hypersensitivity reactions, suicidal thoughts and behaviour, peripheral neuropathy, tendinitis, tendon rupture. Injection: pain at inj site, thrombophlebitis.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Epilepsy or lowered seizure threshold. History of tendinitis. Growing adolescents. Precautions: Psychiatric disorders, renal and hepatic impairment, Myasthaenia gravis, diabetes, G6PD deficiency, risk factors for QT prolongation. Advise patients to report signs of liver disease. Risk of pseudomembranous colitis; consider if patient has persistent diarrhoea. Avoid strong UV light. Elderly. Consult eye specialist immediately if visual disorders occur.
Advice
Take with or without meals. Do not take within 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking dairy products, antacids or other medications. Inform prescriber and discontinue medication if there is tendon pain/inflammation, burning/redness/pain/swelling/irritation at infusion site, urticaria, itching, facial swelling, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, loss of consciousness, chest pain, palpitations, tingling. Contact prescriber if there is increased sleepiness, tremors, agitation, skin rash, changes in vision, difficulty in breathing, sore throat, chills, fever, burning/itching on urination, white plaques in mouth, vaginal discharge or if there is worsening of condition. Interactions with Ofloxacin, Inf/Oral
Magnesium or aluminium antacids, sucralfate, glibenclamide and other hypoglycaemics, iron, zinc, probenecid, cimetidine, furosemide, methotrexate, NSAIDs, anticoagulants, corticosteroids, drugs that prolong the QT interval. Injection: Barbiturate anaesthetics, hypotensives.
