About Fluvoxamine Maleate
Antidepressant
Uses
Treatment of symptoms of depressive illness.
How to take it
Adults: Initial: 50 mg every night. Titrate: Increase by 50 mg every 4-7 day. Maintenance: 100-300 mg/day. Max: 300 mg/day. Children: 8-17 yr: Initial: 25 mg every night. Titrate: Increase by 25 mg every 4-7 day. Maintenance: 50-200 mg/day. Max 8-11 yr: 200 mg/day. Adolescents: 300 mg/day.
Side effects
Nausea and vomiting, somnolence, diarrhoea, agitation, anorexia, tremor, convulsions, GI upset, dry mouth, headache, malaise, tachycardia, palpitations, asthenia, dizziness, insomnia, sweats, anxiety, nervousness, hyponatraemia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: History of epilepsy. Within 2 weeks of stopping MAOIs or 1 day of stopping moclobemide. Precautions: Hepatic or renal insufficiency. History of epilepsy, bleeding disorders, acute cardiac disease, diabetes, mania/hypomania, raised IOP, risk factors for narrow-angle glaucoma. Monitor for suicidal ideation. If patient develops akathisia or psychomotor restlessness, increasing dose may be detrimental. Withdraw gradually.
Advice
Take with or without meals. Do not stop taking medication abruptly, gradually lower the dose and then stop. Contact prescriber if there is headache, excitation, anxiety, lack of sleep, restlessness, nervousness, mania, seizures, increased sleepiness, abnormal thoughts, skin rash, skin irritation, muscle cramps or tremors, change in gait, change in urinary pattern, chest pain or palpitations or if there is worsening of condition. Avoid alcohol and caffeine during therapy. Take sufficient amount of fluids (2-3 litres per day) to maintain hydration, unless restricted by the prescriber. Propranolol, theophylline, phenytoin, warfarin, MAOIs, alcohol, lithium, tryptophan, tizanidine, linezolid, xanthines, methadone, mexiletine, carbamazepine, cyclosporin, sildenafil, benzodiazepines, drugs affecting platelet function, anticoagulants, TCADs, antipsychotics, ropinirole, St John's wort, ECT, other SSRIs, SNRIs, 5HT1 agonists/triptans, other serotonergic drugs.
