Uses

Vitamin E deficiency because of malabsorption in congenital or hereditary chronic cholestasis. Used in other indications with little scientific evidence of its value such as: intermittent claudication; as adjuvant in the treatment of fertility disturbances, such as habitual abortion & tendency to premature delivery.

How to take it

Adults: Malabsorption in cystic fibrosis: 100-200 mg daily. Malabsorption in abetalipoproteinaemia: 50-100 mg/kg daily. Children: Vitamin E deficiency: Orally. Neonate, 10 mg/kg once daily; 1 mth-18 yr, 2-10 mg/kg daily, up to 20 mg/kg has been used. Malabsorption in cystic fibrosis: Orally (with food and pancreatic enzymes). 1 mth-1 yr, 50 mg once daily, adjusted as necessary; 1-12 yr, 100 mg once daily, adjusted as necessary; 12-18 yr, 100-200 mg once daily, adjusted as necessary. Vitamin E deficiency in cholestasis and severe liver disease: Orally. Neonate, 10 mg/kg daily; 1 mth-12 yr, Initially 100 mg daily, adjusted according to response; up to 200 mg/kg daily may be required; 12-18…

Side effects

Diarrhoea, less commonly asthaenia, headache, disturbances in serum-potassium and serum-sodium concentration, alopecia, pruritus and rash.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Pre-term newborns. Precautions: May induce vitamin K deficiency; predisposition to thrombosis; necrotizing enterocolitis with large oral dosage in neonates. Renal or hepatic impairment, dehydration.

Interactions with Vitamin E

Vitamin K. Impairs the haematological response to iron in children with iron-deficiency anaemia (Monitor). Oral anticoagulants, steroids, antibiotics, antihistamines, ciclosporin, tacrolimus.
