About Aliskiren
Antihypertensive
Uses
Essential hypertension.
How to take it
Adults: 150 mg once daily. If necessary increase to 300 mg once daily. Children: Not recommended.
Side effects
Diarrhoea, rash, rarely angioedema, anaemia, hyperkalaemia. Arthralgia, dizziness.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Hereditary or idiopathic angioedema. Severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m2) Precautions: Patients taking concomitant diuretics, on a low sodium diet, or who are dehydrated (first dose may cause hypotension, initiate with care), renal artery stenosis, renal impairment, monitor plasma-potassium concentration and renal function in renal impairment, hepatic impairment, diabetes mellitus and heart failure. History of angioedema. Advise patients to report any symptoms suggestive of allergic reactions.
Advice
Take with or without meals. Avoid high-fat meals during therapy. Stop taking medication and seek medical attention if there is swelling of face, extremities, eyes, lips, or tongue or if patient has trouble swallowing or breathing. Change position slowly to prevent light-headedness and fainting. Light-headedness and fainting could also result from dehydration due to inadequate fluid intake, excessive sweating, diarrhoea, vomiting. Avoid potassium containing supplements and medications.

Interactions with Aliskiren
Angiotensin-II receptor antagonists, anticoagulants, antifungals, diuretics, potassium salts, K+-sparing diuretics, K+ suppl, other antihypertensives, heparin, digoxin, furosemide, torasemide, macrolides, amiodarone, St John's wort, rifampicin, cyclosporin, NSAIDs, fruit juice, drinks containing plant extracts.
