About Glimepiride
Hypoglycaemic excluding Insulin
Uses
Non-insulin-dependent (type 2) diabetes mellitus.
How to take it
Adults: Usual initial dosage 1 mg once daily; daily dosage may be increased at intervals of 1-2 wk and carried out stepwise as follows: 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg, 4 mg, 6 mg and in exceptional cases 8 mg. Usual maintenance dose 1 mg to 4 mg daily. Children: Not recommended.
Side effects
Hypoglycaemia, signs of adrenergic counterregulation, hepatitis, liver failure, thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anaemia, GI upset, skin reactions, blood dyscrasias, transient visual disturbances.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic precoma or coma, hypersensitivity to glimepiride or other sulfonylureas or sulfonamides, serious renal or hepatic dysfunction, dialysis patients. Precautions: Regular monitoring of glucose levels in blood and urine. Milder or absent symptoms of hypoglycaemia, e.g. in patients with autonomic neuropathy or taking beta blockers, clonidine, reserpine, guanethidine or other sympatholytic drugs. Advice
Take just before meals or with first meal of the day. Do not skip the meal after taking medication. Contact prescriber if there is severe or persistent hypoglycaemia, palpitations, sweaty palms, lightheadedness, extended vomiting or flu-like symptoms, skin rash, easy bruising or bleeding or change in color of urine or stool. Do not take other medication within 2 hours of taking glimepiride. Monitor glucose level as advised by the prescriber. Carry candy or other simple sugars to treat mild hypoglycaemia. Carry identification card indicating diabetes. Avoid direct sunlight, use protective clothing, wear sunscreen and eyewear to prevent photosensitivity. Avoid alcohol.
