About Dipyridamole

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet

Uses

ORAL: Adjunct to oral anticoagulants in the prophylaxis of thrombosis of prosthetic heart valves. INJECTION: Evaluation of coronary heart disease (Diagnostic only).

How to take it

ORAL: Adults: 300-600 mg daily in three or four doses before meals. Children: 5 mg/kg body-wt. daily in divided doses. INJECTION: Diagnostic only, see literature. Evaluation of coronary heart disease: Adults: IV 0.14 mg/kg/min for 4 min; max dose 60 mg. Administer by IV infusion over 4 min. Thallium-201 should be injected within 5 min following the 4-min infusion of dipyridamole. Reconstitution: Dilute in at least a 1:2 ratio with 0.45% NaCl, 0.9% NaCl, or 5% dextrose for a total volume of approximately 20 to 50 mL. Side effects

Headache, dizziness, Gl upset, rash.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: Rapidly progressing angina, subvalvular aortic stenosis, haemodynamic instability associated with recent MI.

Advice

Take 1 hour before meals with water or 2 hours after meals. If there is abdominal discomfort, it may be taken with meals or milk. Sit or lie down when taking medication. Contact prescriber if there is chest pain, redness around mouth, acute abdominal cramping, severe diarrhoea, acute and persistent headache or dizziness, rash, respiratory difficulty or swelling of extremities. Consult prescriber before taking aspirin and other OTC NSAIDs because of the possible increased risk of bleeding. Avoid using sharp things, needles or razors.
