Cephalosporin

Uses

Bronchitis, otitis media and pharyngitis/tonsillitis due to H. influenzae, M. Catarrhalis, both Beta-lactamase producing and non-producing strains, as well as S. pneumoniae (weak) and S. pyogenes.

How to take it

Adults & Children: Above 12 yr: 400 mg once daily for 10 days. Max 400 mg. Children: Below 12 yr, 9 mg/kg/day for 10 days. Max 400 mg/day. Lower Respiratory Infection: Adults & Children: >12 yr: 400 mg once daily for 10 days. >6 mth: 9 mg/kg once daily for 10 days. Max: 400 mg/day. Otitis Media Acute: Adults & Children: >6 mth: 9 mg/kg once daily for 10 days. Max: 400 mg/day. Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: Adults & Children: >12 yr: 400 mg once daily for 10 days. >6 mth: 9 mg/kg once daily for 10 days. Max: 400 mg/day.

Side effects

Headache, dizziness, GI upset, increased eosinophils, decreased haemoglobin, thrombocytosis.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: Penicillin sensitivity. Impaired renal function.

Advice

Take capsules with or without meals. Take suspension 2 hours before or 1 hour after meals. Take at regular intervals, as scheduled. Shake oral suspension well before measuring and use a calibrated measuring device to ensure accurate dose. To improve flavour of oral suspension, refrigerate it but do not freeze. Contact prescriber if you experience changes in urinary pattern, severe unrelieved diarrhoea, vaginal itching, vaginal drainage, mouth sores, bloody stool, bloody urine, rash. Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better. Take sufficient amount of fluids (2-3 litres per day) to maintain hydration, unless restricted by the prescriber.
