Corticosteroid Combinations, Eye

Uses

Steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular condition for which a corticosteroid is indicated and where bacterial infection or a risk of bacterial ocular infection exists. Post-operative inflammation and any other ocular inflammation associated with infection.

How to take it

Adults: One or two drops instilled into the conjunctival sac every 4 to 6 hr. During initial 24 to 48 hr, the dosage may be increased to 1 or 2 drops every 2 hr. Frequency must be decreased gradually or warranted by improvement in clinical signs. Care should be taken not to discontinue the therapy prematurely.

Side effects

Conjunctival irritation, increased lacrimation, keratitis and papillary conjunctivitis. Secondary infection.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Contraindications: Epithelial herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, varicella and in many other viral diseases of the conjunctiva and cornea. Mycobacterial infection of the eye and fungal diseases of ocular structure and in individuals hypersensitive to any of the component of medication. Precautions: Prolonged use of steroids may result in glaucoma with damage to the optic nerve, defects in visual acuity and fields of vision and posterior subcapsular cataract formation.

Advice

Wash hands properly before use. To instill medication into eyes, tilt head back, look upward, instill drops or apply thin layer of ointment inside lower eyelid. Close eye and roll eyeball in all directions. Do not blink for 30 seconds. Apply gentle pressure to inner corner of eye for 30 seconds. Contact prescriber if there is eye pain, changes in vision, no improvement or worsening of condition. Avoid touching tip of applicator with eye. Avoid prolonged use. Do not use any other eye preparation for atleast 10 minutes. Do not share medication with anyone else. Wear sunglasses when in sunlight to prevent photosensitivity.
