About Hydrochlorothiazide

Diuretic

Uses

Mild to moderate hypertension, oedema of congestive cardiac failure and nephrotic syndrome.

How to take it

Adults: Hypertension: Initial: 12.5 mg once daily. Max: 50 mg/day. Oedema: 25-100 mg/day in 1-2 divided doses, max 200 mg/day. Elderly: 12.5-25 mg once daily. Heart Failure: Usual: 25-100 mg daily. May be given every alternate day or 3-5 day per wk. Children: Oedema and hypertension: <6 mth, 1-2 mg/kg/day in 1-2 divided doses; 6 mth-2 yr, 1-3 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses, max 37.5 mg/day; 2-18 yr, 1-2 mg/kg/day, max 3 mg/kg/day (50 mg/day).

Side effects

Anorexia, epigastric distress.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Anuria, renal decompensation. Precautions: Avoid in severe renal disease. Gout, diabetes, patients with moderate to high cholesterol concentrations.

Advice

Take with meals. Contact prescriber if there is persistent flu-like symptoms; chest pain; muscle cramping; palpitations; respiratory difficulty; itching; skin rash; unusual bruising or bleeding; weakness; decreased urination or excessive fatigue. Include potassium-rich foods in diet such as bananas and orange juice. If you have diabetes, check blood glucose level regularly and inform prescriber about changes. Change position slowly. Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and eyewear, avoid direct sunlight to prevent photosensitivity. Weigh yourself at the same time each day wearing the same amount of clothing and notify prescriber if weight is more than 2 lb (0.9 kg) per day or 5 lb (2.3…
