Uses

Reduction of risk of first and recurrent stroke for the patients who have experienced at least one of the following events: Complete thromboembolic stroke, minor stroke, reversible ischaemic neurological deficit (RIND) or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) including transient monocular blindness (TMB). Prevention of major ischaemic accidents particularly coronary, in patients presenting with chronic arterial diseases of the lower limb at all the stages of intermittent claudication.

How to take it

Adults: Stroke: 250 mg twice daily. Coronary Artery Stenting: 250 mg twice daily with Aspirin up to 30 days after stent implant. Take with food. Children: Not recommended.

Side effects

Neutropenia, bone marrow aplasia or pancytopenia, thrombotic, thrombocytopenic purpura, thrombocytopenia. Haemorrhagic complications may occur especially in peri and postoperative setting. Nausea, diarrhoea. Cutaneous, skin rashes of maculopapular & urticarial type may occur within first three months of the therapy. Hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Haemorrhagic diathesis, active peptic ulcer, acute haemorrhage, stroke, prolonged bleeding, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia or agranulocytosis. Precautions: Haematological Monitoring, CBC's with DLC and platelet count should be performed at the start of the treatment and then every two weeks for the first three months and within 15 days after discontinuation of the therapy. Impaired liver function, discontinue if hepatitis or jaundice develop.

Advice

Take with meals or immediately after meals. Do not take aspirin or aspirin containing medications and OTC medications without consulting prescriber. To prevent bleeding, use soft toothbrush or cotton swabs, floss with waxed floss, use electric razor, avoid scissors or sharp knives and harmful activities. Contact prescriber if there is unusual bleeding or bruising, persistent fever, sore throat, weakness, paleness, CNS changes, delayed healing of wounds, skin rash, itching, yellowing of skin or eyes, change in colour of urine or stool, diarrhoea, pain or burning on urination, respiratory difficulty.

Interactions with Ticlopidine

NSAIDs. Antiplatelet drugs, oral anticoagulants, heparins & salicylate derivatives, theophylline, digoxin, phenytoin.
