About Valsartan
Angiotensin-II Antagonist
Uses
Hypertension. Heart failure, myocardial infarction with left ventricular failure or left ventricular systolic dysfunction.
How to take it
Hypertension: Adults: 80 mg once daily, dosage may be increased to 320 mg daily. Max 320 mg daily. With intravascular volume depletion, 40 mg once daily, dose can be increased up to 320 mg daily at intervals of 4 wks if required. Children: Under 6 yr, not recommended. Hypertension: 6-18 yr: Body-weight 18-35 kg, initially 40 mg once daily, adjusted according to response, max 80 mg daily; Body-weight 35-80 kg, initially 80 mg once daily, adjusted according to response, max 160 mg daily; Body-weight 80 kg and over, initially 80 mg once daily, adjusted according to response, max 320 mg daily. Side effects
Very rarely syncope, thrombocytopenia, renal dysfunction, angioedema, dizziness, hypotension.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Severe hepatic impairment, cirrhosis, biliary obstruction, cholestasis, primary hyperaldosteronism. Precautions: Mild to moderate hepatic impairment, severe renal impairment, salt or volume depletion, renal artery stenosis, severe cardiac insufficiency, aortic or mitral stenosis, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Monitor serum K+ in elderly and renally impaired if taking K+ supplement. History of angioedema.
Advice
Take with or without meals. Take medication at the same time each day. Contact prescriber if there is chest pain, palpitations, swelling of ankles/face/tongue, unrelieved headache, muscle pain/weakness, difficulty in breathing, flu-like symptoms or unusual cough. Do not take potassium supplements or salt substitutes without consulting prescriber. Change position slowly when climbing stairs and from lying or sitting to standing position. Keep follow-up appointments with prescriber to monitor progress.

Interactions with Valsartan
K+ sparing diuretics, K+ supplements, salt substitutes, other antihypertensives, lithium, NSAIDs, heparin, cyclosporin, ritonavir, rifampicin, aldosterone antagonists.
