About Itraconazole
Antifungal, Systemic
Uses
Pityriasis versicolor, dermatophytosis. Vulvovaginal candidiasis.
How to take it
Adults: Take with full meal. Blastomycosis/ Histoplasmosis: 200 mg once daily. Increase by 100 mg if no improvement. Max: 400 mg/day. Aspergillosis: 200-400 mg/day. Life-threatening Infection: Loading Dosage: 200 mg three times daily for 1st 3 day. Continue for minimum 3 mth & until infection subsides. Onychomycosis: Toe nails: 200 mg once daily for 12 wk. Finger nails: 200 mg once daily for 1 wk, stop therapy for 3 wk, then repeat. Oropharyngeal Candidiasis: 200 mg/day for 1-2 wk. Oesophageal Candidiasis: 100-200 mg once daily for minimum 3 wk. Continue for 2 wk after symptoms resolve. Pityriasis versicolor: 200 mg once daily for 7 days. T. corporis and T. cruris: 100 mg once daily for 15…
Side effects
Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, headache, dizziness, dysgeusia, dyspnoea, cough, GI upset, rash, pyrexia, heart failure, hepatotoxicity, neuropathy, hearing loss.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Contraception must be used during and 1 month after treatment. Precautions: History of liver disease, liver toxicity with other drug therapy. CHF, immunocompromised, renal impairment, impaired GI motility. Elderly.
Advice
Take capsule immediately after meals. Take oral solution 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Avoid taking antacids with oral itraconazole. Contact prescriber if there is skin rash, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, headache, hearing loss, peripheral neuropathy. Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better. Keep yourself in a hygienic condition to prevent reinfection. Have blood tests done, as advised by prescriber. If you have diabetes, monitor blood glucose regularly and inform prescriber about the changes. Discontinue medication and inform prescriber if there is anorexia, unusual fatigue, jaundice, nausea, vomiting, pale stool, dark urine. Certain laboratory tests will be required…
