Uses

With antiretroviral agents to treat HIV-1 infection.

How to take it

Cap: Adults: Usually 2 cap or 3 cap twice daily. Cap should be taken with food. Children: Under 2 yr, not recommended; over 2 yr, 230/57.5 mg/m² twice daily with food Max 400/100 mg twice daily. Tab: Adults: Usually 400 mg/100 mg twice daily. Children: <2 yr: Not recommended. >2 yr: According to body surface area: 0.5-0.9m2, 200 mg/50 mg twice daily; 0.9-1.4m², 300 mg/75 mg twice daily; 40 kg or over 1.4m² or over, 400 mg/100 mg twice daily. Soln: Adults: 5 mL twice daily with food. Children: <2 yr: Not recommended. >2 yr: according to body surface area; 2.9 mL/m² twice daily.

Side effects

GI upset, asthaenia, headache, abdominal pain, rash, insomnia, laboratory abnormalities, RTI, skin infection, blood dyscrasias, lymphadenopathy, diabetes, raised lipids, wt loss, anorexia, anxiety, neuropathy, dizziness, hypertension, GI upset, pancreatitis, hepatitis, raised LFTs, pruritus, night sweats, myalgia, arthralgia, muscle spasm or weakness, erectile dysfunction, menstrual disorders, fatigue, PR interval prolongation.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Severe hepatic insufficiency, renal failure. Precautions: Severe renal or mild to moderate hepatic impairment, hepatitis B or C, haemophilia, lipid disorders, pancreatitis, diabetes. Monitor serum lipids and blood glucose. Heart disease, conduction system abnormalities. Risk of wt gain. Risk of immune reactivation syndrome and autoimmune disorders. Risk of osteonecrosis; monitor for signs of joint pain or immobility.

Advice

Take with or without meals. Do not chew or crush or break tablet/capsule. Swallow whole. Follow recommended schedule of all medications as this medication is used in combination with other medications. Contact prescriber if there is calf pain, chest pain, facial edema, redness, swelling, unrelieved constant GI upset, difficulty in breathing, broken skin, skin discolouration, rash. Take sufficient amount of fluids (2-3 litres per day) to maintain hydration, unless restricted by the prescriber. Check your blood glucose level regularly and inform prescriber about changes.
