About Mefenamic Acid
Non-narcotic Analgesic
Uses
Mild to moderate pain, headache, pain in rheumatoid arthritis (including Still's disease), osteoarthrosis, menorrhagia (including IUD users), dysmenorrhoea.
How to take it
TABLETS/CAPSULES: Adults: 500 mg three times daily. Menorrhagia: Adults & Children > 12 yr: 500 mg three times daily starting on first day of menses. SUSPENSION: Children: 6 mth-1 yr, 50 mg; 2-4 yr, 100 mg; 5-8 yr, 150 mg; 9-12 yr, 200 mg. Above 12 yr, same as adult. All eight hourly for not more than seven days.
Side effects
GI intolerance, oedema, hypertension, skin rash (discontinue if occur). Renal impairment, allergic glomerulonephritis. Blood dyscrasias (rare). Raised liver enzymes.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Positive evidence of risk: Use only when no safer alternative exists for a serious problem. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Ulcerative lesions of gastro-intestinal tract. Inflammatory bowel disease. Renal or hepatic impairment. Aspirin/anti- inflammatory induced allergy. Treatment of pain after CABG. Severe heart failure. Precautions: Elderly. Heart failure, epilepsy, bronchial asthma, allergic disorders, hypertension, cardiovascular risk factors, intracranial haemorrhage, bleeding diathesis, SLE and mixed connective tissue disorders, ischaemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, cerebrovascular disease, dehydration, poor CYP2C9…
Advice
Take immediately after meals. Avoid taking antacids with this medication. Do not lie down for 10 minutes after taking this medication. Contact prescriber if there is chest pain, severe dizziness, headache, difficulty in breathing, changes in hearing, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, impaired speech, black stools, constant stomach or abdominal pain, swelling in extremities, fast heartbeat, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, unusual weight gain or tiredness. Check blood pressure regularly and inform prescriber about changes. Avoid alcohol and smoking during therapy. Avoid prolonged exposure to sun. Anticoagulants, quinolones, sulphonylureas, hydantoins, plasma protein bound drug, antihypertensives, diuretics, digoxin, methotrexate, cyclosporin, mifepristone, corticosteroids, other NSAIDs, SSRIs, antiplatelets, aminoglycosides, tacrolimus, zidovudine.
