Anti-rheumatic, Systemic

Uses

Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthrosis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute articular and peri-articular disorders.

How to take it

ORAL: Adults: 200 mg daily either divided in two doses or as a single dose. Children: Not recommended. INJECTION: Adults: 50-100 mg by deep IM every 4 hr. Max: 200 mg daily for 3 days. Children: Not recommended. ADHESIVE PATCH: Adults: One patch applied 12 hourly at the site of pain. Children: Not recommended.

Side effects

Gl intolerance, rash, ulcerative stomatitis, hypersensitivity reactions, nephrotoxicity, abnormal liver function, neurological, dermatological and haematological reactions. Serious skin reactions and blurred vision (discontinue), jaundice, hepatitis.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Severe renal or hepatic dysfunction. Active peptic ulcer or history of recurrent peptic ulceration or history of GI bleeding. Asthma. Aspirin/anti- inflammatory induced allergy. Dyspepsia. Severe heart failure. Bleeding diathesis. Proctitis. Precautions: History of GI disease. History of asthma or allergic disease. Monitor cardiac, renal or hepatic impairment. Hypertension, peripheral arterial disease, cerebrovascular disease, cardiovascular risk factors. SLE, mixed connective tissue disease. Elderly.

Advice

Take with meals or after meals. Do not crush tablets or break capsules. Swallow whole with a glass of water. Do not lie down for 15-30 minutes after taking medication. Discontinue medication and inform prescriber immediately if there is constant stomach pain/cramps or blood in stool. Contact prescriber if there is difficulty in breathing, unusual cough, unusual bruising or bleeding, blood in vomitus/urine/mouth, chest pain, palpitations, fast heartbeat, skin rash, itching, blisters, fever, acute fatigue, changes in hearing, ringing in ears, swelling in extremities, difficulty in speaking. Anticoagulants, sulphonylureas, hydantoins, antiplatelets, thrombolytics, antithrombotics, quinolones, sulfonamides, phenytoin, lithium, methotrexate, digoxin, diuretics, mifepristone, antihypertensives, cyclosporin, corticosteroids, tacrolimus, zidovudine, SSRIs, pentoxifylline, other NSAIDs.
