About Methylprednisolone Aceponate, Topical

Corticosteroid, Plain

Uses

Endogenous eczema (atopic dermatitis, neurodermatitis), contact eczema, degenerative, dyshidrotic, vulgar eczema, eczema in children.

How to take it

Adults & Children: Apply thinly once daily; max duration 12 wk in adults and 4 wk in children.

Side effects

Itching, burning, erythema or vesiculation. Thinning of the skin (atrophy), dilatation of cutaneous vessels (telangiectasia), the formation of stripes (striae) or acneiform skin conditions, folliculitis, increased growth of body hair (hypertrichosis), perioral dermatitis.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Tuberculous or syphilitic processes in the area to be treated, viral diseases (e.g. vaccinia, chicken-pox, singles). Precautions: Systemic effects usually result from use of more potent steroids, use over large surface area and the addition of occlusive dressings. If local irritation develops discontinue use. Skin atrophy may be clinically significant after prolong use of potent steroids or use on areas with higher percutaneous absorption. Do not use steroid as sole therapy in psoriasis. Do not use potent steroids to treat diaper dermatoses in infants.

Advice

For external use only. Apply fatty ointment & cream ointment, fatty ointment or cream as a thin layer to the affected areas. Apply lotion to cover affected areas and rub in gently. The duration of use should be less than 12 weeks in adults and less than 4 weeks in children. If the skin dries out excessively during treatment with cream or lotion, a change should be made to one of the formulations with a higher fat content i.e. ointment or fatty ointment.
