About Atropine, Eye
Mydriatic, Cycloplegic
Uses
Long acting mydriatic and cycloplegic for use in uveitis and refraction.
How to take it
DROP: Uveitis: Adults: 1 drop three times daily. Children: 1 drop three times daily. Refraction: Adults: 1-2 drops one hr before examination. Children: 1 drop twice daily for one or two days before examination. OINTMENT: Adults: Small quantity of oint once or twice daily.
Side effects
Vomiting, fever, rashes, dizziness, confusion, hallucination, restlessness, delirium, retrosternal pain. Muscarinic effects (e.g., dry mouth, mydriasis, cycloplegia, photophobia, flushing, dry skin, rash, bradycardia followed by tachycardia, palpitations and arrhythmias, difficult micturition, constipation, reduced bronchial secretions).
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Closed angle glaucoma, narrow angle between iris and cornea. Soft lenses. Prostatic enlargement, paralytic ileus or pyloric stenosis, severe ulcerative colitis, myasthenia gravis. Precautions: Renal or hepatic impairment. Use with caution in children and elderly, in Down's syndrome, diarrhoea, GORD, urinary retention, acute MI, hypertension, thyrotoxicosis, cardiac insufficiency, cardiac surgery, heart transplant, COPD, fever and when the ambient temperature is high.
Advice
Wash hands properly before use. Remove contact lenses before use. Wait 15 minutes before reinserting. To instill medication into eyes, tilt head back, look upward, instill drops or apply thin layer inside lower eyelid. Close eye and roll eyeball in all directions. Do not blink for 30 seconds. Apply gentle pressure to inner corner of eye for 30 seconds. Contact prescriber if there is eye damage, eye infection, changes in vision, loss of vision, no improvement or worsening of condition. Avoid touching tip of applicator with eye. Do not share medication with anyone else. Wait 5 minutes before instilling any other medication.

Interactions with Atropine, Eye
Phenothiazines, amantadine, TCADs, antihistamines, MAOIs, domperidone, metoclopramide, disopyramide, mexiletine, ketoconazole, sublingual preps (e.g., nitrates- due to dry mouth), parasympathomimetics, propofol.
