About Tamoxifen

Cytostatic

Uses

Breast cancer. Anovulatory infertility.

How to take it

Breast cancer: Adults: 20 mg daily increasing to 40 mg daily if necessary. Children: Not applicable. Anovulatory infertility: Adults: 20 mg daily on four successive days commencing on 2nd day of menstruation. Increase if necessary to 40 mg then 80 mg for subsequent courses. Children: Not applicable.

Side effects

Hot flushes, vaginal bleeding. Gl distress, dizziness. Visual disturbances (withdraw). Fluid retention, depression, headache, fatigue, anaemia, thromboembolic events, ischaemic cerebrovascular events, sensory disturbance, rash, pruritus vulvae, uterine fibroids, endometrial hyperplasia and polyps, elevated triglycerides.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Precautions: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia or hyperlipidaemias. Increased risk of thromboembolic events.

Advice

Take with meals. Swallow whole with water. Do not chew. Bone pain is a sign of good response by medication, consult prescriber for suitable mild analgesic. Contact prescriber if there is severe nausea or vomiting, unusual vaginal bleeding, menstrual irregularities, unusual bruising or bleeding, sleepiness, mental changes, severe weakness, yellowing of skin, swelling or pain in calves, swelling on face, vision changes, difficulty in breathing. Take sufficient amount of fluids (2-3 litres per day) to maintain hydration, unless restricted by the prescriber. Take small, frequent meals to maintain good nutritional status. Interactions with Tamoxifen

Warfarin, allopurinol, cyclosporin, bromocriptine, rifampicin, paroxetine, fluoxetine, bupropion, quinidine, anticonvulsants, other CYP3A4 inducers, cinacalcet and other potent CYP2D6 inhibitors.
