About Nabumetone

Anti-rheumatic, Systemic

Uses

Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis.

How to take it

Adults: 1000 mg as a single bedtime dose. In more severe cases an additional 500-1000 mg may be given in the morning. Elderly: 500-1000 mg daily. Children: Not recommended.

Side effects

Diarrhoea, dyspepsia, nausea, constipation, abdominal pain, flatulence, headache, dizziness, skin rashes, sedation, GI upset, pruritus, oedema, ear disorders, increased BP. Serious skin reactions, raised liver enzymes, jaundice, hepatic failure, blood dyscrasias, renal failure, visual disturbances.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Severe heart failure. Active peptic ulcer, GI bleeding or perforation, severe hepatic impairment, active bleeding. Precautions: Elderly. Aspirin/anti-inflammatory induced allergies. History of peptic ulceration. Impaired renal or hepatic function. CHF, hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, cerebrovascular disease, cardiovascular risk factors. SLE, mixed connective tissue disorders. Use lowest effective dose for shortest duration. Elderly.

Advice

Take with or without meals. To prevent GI upset, take with meals. Do not chew or crush tablets, swallow whole with a glass of water. Do not lie down for 15-30 minutes after taking medication. Discontinue medication and inform prescriber immediately if there is constant stomach pain/cramps or blood in stool. Contact prescriber if there is unusual cough, difficulty in breathing, unusual bruising or bleeding, chest pain, palpitations, fast heartbeat, swelling in extremities, blood in urine/stool/mouth or vomitus, acute fatigue, skin rash, itching, blisters, fever, changes in hearing, ringing in ears, yellowing of skin or eyes, difficulty in speaking. Interactions with Nabumetone

Oral anticoagulants, hydantoin, anticonvulsants, sulphonylureas hypoglycaemics, antiplatelets, aspirin, other NSAIDs, corticosteroids, phenytoin, antihypertensives, diuretics, mifepristone, quinolones, cyclosporin, alcohol, bisphosphonates, pentoxifylline, sulfinpyrazone, sulfonamides, SSRIs.
