About Nalidixic Acid

Urinary Anti-infective

Uses

Urinary tract infections. Gastro-intestinal infections due to gram-negative organisms.

How to take it

Adults: Urinary tract infections: Acute infections, 1 gm four times daily for min 7 day. Chronic infections, 500 mg four times daily. GI infections: 500 mg-1 gm four times daily. Children: Under 3 mth, not recommended; Urinary tract infection resistant to other antibiotics: 3 mth-12 yr, 12.5 mg/kg 4 times daily for 7 days, reduced to 7.5 mg/kg 4 times daily in prolonged therapy or 15 mg/kg twice daily for prophylaxis; 12-18 yr, 900 mg 4 times daily for 7 days, reduced in chronic infections to 600 mg 4 times daily.

Side effects

Gl, CNS and visual disturbances. Skin rashes, blood dyscrasias, convulsions, photosensitivity, intracranial hypertension.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: History of convulsive disorders. Porphyria. Precautions: Liver disease, severe kidney dysfunction. Avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight.

Advice

Take atleast 2 hours before or after aluminium, calcium, or magnesium containing antacids, didanosine chewable buffered tablets or oral solution prepared from powder, multivitamins that contain iron or zinc, or sucralfate. Discontinue medication and inform prescriber if there is tendon pain or inflammation or abnormal changes in motor or sensory function or rash. Inform prescriber if diarrhoea remains even after 2 months of stopping therapy. Inform prescriber if there are changes in vision, confusion, drowsiness, hallucinations, psychosis and seizures.
