About Moxifloxacin, Inf/Oral
Quinolone
Uses
Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, community acquired pneumonia (CAP) when other antibiotics cannot be used or have failed. Mild to moderate pelvic inflammatory disease, without associated tubo-ovarian or pelvic abscess, in combination with another antibiotic (unless moxifloxacin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoea can be excluded). Completion of therapy in CAP and complicated skin and skin structure infections that have responded to IV moxifloxacin.
How to take it
ORAL: Adults: 400 mg daily. Treatment duration: Chronic bronchitis, 5-10 days; sinusitis, 7 days; pneumonia, 10 days; pelvic inflammatory disease, 14 days. Children: Not recommended. INJECTION: Adults: 400 mg by IV infusion over 60 min, once daily. Switch to oral treatment when clinically indicated. Total duration of treatment: Community acquired pneumonia: 7-14 days; Complicated skin and skin structure infections: 7-21 days. Children: Not recommended. By IV infusion over 60 min once every 24 hour. No dilution of the inj is necessary. Compatibility: Stable in NS, D5W, D10W, LR. Stability: Store at 25°C. Do not refrigerate.
Side effects
Abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, GI upset, QT prolongation in patients with hypokalaemia, abnormal LFTs. Superinfections, pseudomembranous colitis. Infusion: Also infusion site reactions.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: History of tendon disorders related to quinolone treatment, congenital or documented acquired QT prolongation, electrolyte disturbance, significant bradycardia, heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction, history of arrhythmia, liver impairment (Child Pugh C), LFTs >5 x ULN. MRSA. Precautions: Risk of seizures; discontinue if occur. Seek specialist ophthalmological advice if any effects on eyes. Risk of tendon inflammation/rupture; advise patients (especially elderly) to report limb pain or inflammation. Proarrhythmic conditions including acute MI and QT…
Advice
Take with or without meals. Swallow whole tablet. Take medication atleast 4 hours before and 8 hours after aluminium or magnesium containing antacids, didanosine chewable buffered tablets or oral solution prepared from powder, multivitamins containing iron or zinc, or sucralfate. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Contact prescriber if there is swelling of lips/tongue/mouth/throat, chest tightness or pain, palpitations, back pain, itching, difficulty in breathing, tendon pain, tendon inflammation, skin rash, tingling, dizziness, confusion, abnormal thinking, insomnia, anxiety, sunburn, changes in urinary pattern, vaginal…

Interactions with Moxifloxacin, Inf/Oral
Drugs that prolong the QT interval including antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics, neuroleptics, TCADs, antimicrobials, antihistamines, cisapride. Corticosteroids, hypokalaemic agents, anticoagulants. Oral: Also, antacids, didanosine, sucralfate, charcoal, iron or zinc supplements.
