About Mitomycin
Cytostatic
Uses
Chronic lymphatic leukaemia, chronic myelogenous leukaemia. Gastric, colorectal, lung, pancreatic, liver, cervix, endometrium, head & neck, breast and bladder cancer.
How to take it
Adults & Elderly: Refer to individual protocols; Single-agent therapy: IV: 20 mg/m² every 6-8 wk. Combination therapy: IV: 10 mg/m² every 6-8 wk. Bladder carcinoma: 20-40 mg/dose. Children: Not recommended. IV: Vesicant. Administer slow IV push or by slow (15-30 min) infusion via a freely-running dextrose or saline infusion. Consider using a central venous catheter. Further dilution to 20-40 mcg/mL in NS or Sodium Lactate. Reconstitution: Dilute powder with SWFI or 0.9% sodium chloride to a concentration of 0.5-1 mg/mL. Compatibility: Stable in LR.
Side effects
Bone-marrow depression, GI upset, wt loss, rash, mouth ulcer, pulmonary toxicity, alopecia, cystitis, myelosuppression, infections, stomatitis, anorexia, skin and inj site reactions, renal disorders, asthenia, fatigue, malaise, pyrexia, chills, flushing, hypertension, bleeding tendency, oedema. Cystitis, bladder atrophy and urinary disorders following bladder instillation. Liver and biliary tract disorders following inj into hepatic artery.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Positive evidence of risk: Use only when no safer alternative exists for a serious problem. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Thrombocytopenia, coagulation disorder, increased bleeding tendency, leucopenia. Precautions: Monitor renal and hepatic function. Haematology, bone marrow depression, children. Renal or hepatic impairment, myelosuppression, infections. Elderly.
Advice
This medication is administered intravenously. Report immediately if there is redness/swelling/pain/burning at infusion site. Contact prescriber if there is fever, chills, sore throat, fatigue, burning on urination, unrelieved nausea or diarrhoea, unusual cough, sudden weight gain, difficulty in breathing, swelling of extremities, numbness, tingling, loss of sensation, rash or itching. Using soft toothbrush, cotton swabs, waxed dental floss, regular mouth care, frequent rinses may help to prevent mouth sores.
