About Eletriptan
Antimigraine Preparations
Uses
Acute treatment of headache phase of migraine with or without aura.
How to take it
Adults: Initially 40 mg swallowed whole with water during headache phase. If headache recurs in patients who respond, repeat dose within 24 hr but not within 2 hr of first dose. Max 80 mg daily. Patients who fail to respond initially should not receive sec dose for same attack. Elderly, not recommended. Children: Not recommended.
Side effects
Asthaenia, chest symptoms (pain, tightness, pressure), headache, abdominal pain, back pain, chills, throat tightness, flushing, palpitations, tachycardia, GI upset, dry mouth, Myasthaenia, myalgia, somnolence, dizziness, hypoesthesia, vertigo, pharyngitis, sweats, sensation of warmth, tingling, hypertonia, allergic reactions.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Severe renal or severe hepatic impairment, moderate to severe or untreated mild hypertension, coronary heart disease, ischaemic heart disease, angina, previous MI, confirmed silent ischaemia, Prinzmetal's angina, significant arrhythmias, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, history of cerebrovascular accident or transient ischaemic attack. Hemiplegic, ophthalmoplegic or basilar migraine, atypical headache. Precautions: Mild to moderate renal impairment; reduce initial and max dose. Risk of cardiac or coronary artery disease; assess prior to use.
Advice
Take with or without meals. Do not chew, crush or break tablets, swallow whole. Do not take this medication within 24 hours of taking another medication without consulting prescriber. Do not take more than 2 doses in one day. Second dose may be taken after 2 hours if headache returns but there was improvement. If there is no improvement with first dose, do not take second dose without consulting prescriber. Contact prescriber immediately if there is difficulty in breathing, chest pain, palpitations, chest tightness, back pain, muscle weakness, tremors, change in mental status, depression, confusion, irritation, lack of sleep, swelling of face/lips/eyelids, throat, skin rash, hives.

Interactions with Eletriptan
Ergotamine or its derivatives, methysergide, other triptans or 5HT1 agonists, potent CYP3A4 inhibitors, protease inhibitors, St. John's Wort.
