Cephalosporin

Uses

Tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, acute purulent bronchitis, exacerbation of chronic obstructive bronchitis, bacterial pneumonia, skin and urinary tract infection.

How to take it

Lower Respiratory Infection: Adults & Children: >12 yr: 200 mg every 12 hr for 10-14 days. Otitis Media: Children: 2 mth-11 yr: 5 mg/kg every 12 hr for 5 days. Upper Respiratory Infection: Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: Adults & Children: >12 yr: 100 mg every 12 hr for 5-10 days. 2 mth-11 yr: 5 mg/kg every 12 hr for 5-10 days. Sinusitis: Adults & Children: 12 yr: 200 mg every 12 hr for 10 days. 2 mth-11 yr: 5 mg/kg every 12 hr for 10 days. Skin Infection: Adults & Children: >12 yr: 400 mg every 12 hr for 7-14 days. Urinary Tract Infection: Adults & Children: >12 yr: Uncomplicated UTI: 100 mg every 12 hr for 7 days.

Side effects

GI upset. Headache, dizziness, tinnitus, paraesthesia, asthaenia, malaise, allergic reactions. Raised liver enzymes, blood urea and creatinine. Pseudomembranous colitis. Positive Coomb's test.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Phenylketonuria (susp only; contains aspartame). Precautions: Renal impairment. Beta-lactam and penicillin hypersensitivity.

Advice

Take with meals. Take at regular intervals, as scheduled. Do not take an antacid within 2 hours before or after taking medication. Shake oral suspension well before measuring and use a calibrated measuring device to ensure accurate dose. To improve flavour of oral suspension, refrigerate it but do not freeze. Contact prescriber if there is severe unrelieved diarrhoea, changes in urinary pattern, vaginal itching, vaginal drainage, mouth sores, blood in urine, unusual chills or fever, rash. Watery or bloody stools can occur 2 or more months after therapy and can be serious, requiring immediate treatment. Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better.
