About Ferrous Fumarate

Iron Plain and with Folic Acid

Uses

Prophylaxis of iron and folic acid deficiency in pregnancy.

How to take it

Adults: 1 tab daily before meals. Children: Not recommended.

Side effects

GI upset, allergic reactions.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Controlled studies shown no risk. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Active peptic ulcer, regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis, Vit B 12 deficiency, paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria, haemosiderosis, haemochromatosis, repeated blood transfusion. Precautions: 1st trimester, history of peptic ulcer, folate dependent tumours.

Interactions with Ferrous Fumarate

Tetracyclines, antacids, co-trimoxazole, anticonvulsants, penicillamine, chloramphenicol, sulphasalazine, cholestyramine.
