About Irbesartan
Angiotensin-II Antagonist
Uses
Treatment of essential hypertension & renal disease in patients with hypertension & type II diabetes mellitus.
How to take it
Adults: Hypertension: Initial & maintenance dose: 150 mg once daily. May be increased to 300 mg or other antihypertensive agents can be added. In patients receiving haemodialysis, 75-150 mg once daily, increased to 300 mg once daily if necessary. Renal disease in hypertensive type 2 diabetes mellitus: Adults 18-74 yrs: 150 mg once daily, increased to 300 mg once daily if tolerated. =75 yrs: 75-150 mg once daily, increased to 300 mg once daily if tolerated. In patients receiving haemodialysis, 75-150 mg once daily, increased to 300 mg once daily if tolerated. Children: Not recommended.
Side effects
Dizziness, fatigue, headache, flushing, musculoskeletal trauma, nausea/vomiting, abnormal urination, increased plasma creatine kinase, orthostatic hypotension and dizziness, hyperkalaemia in type II diabetes with renal disease.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Primary aldosteronism. Precautions: Patients who are volume & Na depleted by vigorous diuretic therapy, dietary salt restriction, diarrhoea or vomiting. Renovascular hypertension, renal impairment & kidney transplantation, aortic or mitral stenosis or obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Primary aldosteronism, hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes & renal disease, hyperkalaemia. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Advice
Take with or without meals. Take first dose at bedtime. Take medication at the same time each day. Contact prescriber if there is chest pain, palpitations, skin rash, fluid retention, swelling of ankles/feet, difficulty in breathing or unusual cough. Take enough amount of fluid to prevent dehydration during hot weather. Keep follow-up appointments with prescriber to monitor progress.
