Uses
Treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, See under dosage.
How to take it
ORAL/INJECTION IV: Adults: 400 mg every 24 hr. The duration of treatment for following infections are: Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 5 days. Acute sinusitis: 10 days. Community-acquired pneumonia: 7-14 days. Uncomplicated skin structure infections: 7-10 days. Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (cystitis): 3 days. Complicated urinary tract infections: 7-10 days. Acute pyelonephritis: 7-10 days. Uncomplicated urethral and cervical or rectal gonorrhoea: Single dose. Children: Not recommended. Inj must be diluted to 2 mg/mL prior to administration. Infuse over 60 min. Compatibility: Stable in D5LR, D5W, D5NS. Incompatible with SWFI. Stability: Store at 25°C. Do not…
Side effects
Headache, dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea, vaginitis.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to gatifloxacin or other quinolone. Precautions: Use with caution in patients with significant bradycardia or acute myocardial ischaemia. May prolong QT interval. May cause increased CNS stimulation. Use with caution in individuals at risk of seizures. Discontinue if significant CNS adverse effects occur. Serious disruptions in glucose regulation (including hyperglycaemia and severe hypoglycaemia) may occur, generally in patients with diabetes. Tendon inflammation and/or rupture discontinue at first signs or symptoms of tendon or pain. May exacerbate Myasthaenia…
Advice
Take with or without meals. Take 4 hours before antacids or mineral supplements containing iron, magnesium or zinc. If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double the dose. Contact prescriber if you experience hallucinations, dizziness, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, rash, itching, tendon pain, difficulty in swallowing or breathing, chest tightness or pain, swelling of lips/tongue/mouth/throat, back pain, changes in urinary pattern, changes in vision or hearing, vaginal burning/itching or discharge, blood in urine, unusual bleeding or bruising. Interactions with Gatifloxacin
Drugs which prolong QT interval, drugs which induce bradycardia, hypoglycaemic agents, insulin, probenecid, loop diuretics, cimetidine (probably other H2 antagonists), digoxin, warfarin, corticosteroids, antacids.
