Tropicamide, Eye
Mydriatic, Cycloplegic · Anticholinergic
Indications
Mydriatic and cycloplegic (with a rapid recovery of accommodation) for refraction.
Dosage
Adults & Children: 1 or 2 drops of either strength at 1-5 min intervals. If patient not examined within 30 min an additional drop should be used.
Adverse Effects
Transient stinging, raised intra-ocular pressure, local irritation, hyperaemia, oedema, conjunctivitis after prolonged use. Dry mouth, blurred vision, photophobia, tachycardia, dry skin, urinary retention, headache. Psychotic reactions.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Narrow angle glaucoma. Soft contact lenses. Precautions: Inflamed eye. To reduce systemic absorption put pressure over lacrimal sac for 1 min after instillation of drops.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset: Rapid. Duration: 3-8 hrs. Mydriasis may persist for 24 hrs. Time to peak effect: 15-60 mins.
