Triazolam
Tranquilizer, Sedative/Hypnotic · Benzodiazepine
Indications
All types of insomnia. In particular where difficulty in falling asleep. Frequent nocturnal awakenings. &/or early morning awakenings, are the chief complaints. In recurring insomnia, acute & chronic medical & surgical situations requiring restful sleep, insomnia associated with anxiety states & emotional distress.
Dosage
Adults: 0.25-0.5 mg; Elderly, 0.125-0.25 mg. The dosage to be taken at bed time. Children: Not recommended.
Adverse Effects
Drowsiness, dizziness, light headedness, impaired coordination. Occasionally, anterograde amnesia, confusion, agitation.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Precautions: Addiction-prone individuals; latent depression; suicidal tendencies; impaired renal or hepatic function; sleep apnoea; severe pulmonary insufficiency. Avoid operating machinery or driving vehicles.
Interactions
Alcohol, CNS depressants, anticonvulsants, CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers (e.g. cimetidine, rifampicin).
Advice to Patient
Take with or without meals. Do not take any new medication, OTC preparations (especially pain medications, sedatives, antihistamines, hypnotics) without consulting prescriber. Discontinue medication and report immediately if there is difficulty in breathing, tightness in throat, abnormal swelling, nausea, or vomiting. Contact prescriber if there is headache, severe dizziness, fatigue, agitation, confusion, depression, increased sleepiness, excitation, lack of sleep, nightmares, change in personality, memory impairment, change in urinary pattern, change in vision, muscle cramps, weakness, tremors or rigidity, ringing in ears, chest pain, palpitations, fast heartbeat, increased sweating, constipation, abdominal cramps, loss of appetite or if there is worsening of condition. Avoid alcohol during therapy. Do not stop taking medication abruptly, gradually lower the dose and then stop. Take…
