Tioconazole
Antifungal, Topical · Imidazole antifungal
Indications
For the topical treatment of dermal infections due to susceptible fungi (dermatophytes and yeasts) and in those conditions complicated by infection with susceptible gram- positive bacteria. Tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, tinea unguium.
Dosage
Adults & Children: Apply to affected area once or twice daily. Duration of treatment may vary from 1 wk to 6 wk and in nail infections from 6 mth to 12 mth.
Adverse Effects
Mild local irritation, peripheral oedema.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy.
Advice to Patient
Insert deep into the vagina. Contact prescriber if there is persistent vaginal burning (>3 days), irritation or discharge. Avoid intercourse during treatment. Relief from symptoms usually takes more than 1 day. There may be interaction with condoms and vaginal contraceptive diaphragms, do not depend on these products for 3 days after treatment. Avoid using tampons, douches, spermicides or other vaginal products during treatment.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset: 24 hrs (symptom improvement); 7 days (complete relief). Absorption: Systemic absorption following a single intravaginal application of tioconazole in nonpregnant patients is negligible. Metabolism: Glucuronidation of the imidazole ring. Time to peak, plasma: 2-24 hrs. Excretion: Urine and faeces.
