Indications
Used as an adjunctive diagnostic tool for serum thyroglobulin (Tg) testing with or without radioiodine imaging in the follow-up of patients with well-differentiated thyroid cancer who have previously undergone thyroidectomy.
Dosage
IM: Used as a two-injection regimen. 0.9 mg IM inj to the buttock followed by a second 0.9 mg IM inj to the buttock 24 hrs later.
Administration
Via IM injection. Withdraw 1 mL of the reconstituted soln (0.9 mg of thyrotropin alfa) and inject intramuscularly in the buttocks. Reconstitution: Add 1.2 mL of SWFI to the vial containing the lyophilized powder. Swirl the contents of the vial until all the material is dissolved. Do not shake the soln. The reconstituted soln has a conc of 0.9 mg of thyrotropin alfa per mL. Compatibility: SWFI. Stability: The reconstituted soln must be injected within 3 hrs unless refrigerated; if refrigerated, the reconstituted soln may be kept for up to 24 hrs.
Adverse Effects
Nausea and headache.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Precautions: Pretreatment with glucocorticoids should be considered for patients in whom tumour expansion may compromise vital anatomic structures.
Advice to Patient
Seek care immediately for any neurologic symptoms occurring after administration of the drug. Keep yourself hydrated prior to treatment with thyrotropin.
Pharmacokinetics
Half-life elimination: 25 ± 10 hrs. Time to peak, serum: 3-24 hrs.
