Thiethylperazine

Antiemetic & Gastroprokinetic · Phenothiazine

Indications

Nausea, vomiting; vertigo; motion sickness.

Dosage

In acute case: Adults: 6.5 mg by IM inj or slow IV. Prevention of post-operative vomiting: Adults: 6.5 mg IM half an hr before the end of operation. Children: Not recommended.

Administration

Inject IM deeply into large muscle mass, patient should be lying down & remain so far at least 1 hour after administration; although not generally recommended, thiethylperazine can be given as an IV infusion over 15-30 min should not be given IV push; SC administration not recommended.

Adverse Effects

CNS disturbances. Anticholinergic effects. ECG and endocrine changes, allergic effects and extrapyramidal symptoms occur rarely at low dosage.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Severely depressed or comatose states. Precautions: Liver dysfunction. Cardiovascular disease. Bone marrow depression.

Interactions

CNS depressants, alcohol, analgesics, antihypertensives, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, antidiabetics.

Advice to Patient

Take rest or do not change position for 1 hour after taking medication. Contact prescriber if CNS reactions, decreased urine output or vision changes occur. Avoid using alcohol. Avoid dangerous activities. Use sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight to prevent photosensitivity. Periodic eye examination is necessary for patients on long term therapy.
