Indications

In Men: Hypogonadism, potency disorders, male climacteric, protein deficiency conditions during convalescence, after surgery and in wasting diseases, cirrhosis of liver, osteoporosis, delayed healing of fractures, aplastic anaemia. In Women: Progressive mammary or endometrial carcinoma, climacteric complaints with existing mammary or endometrial carcinoma.

Dosage

Adults: Hypogonadism: 250 mg IM every 2-3 wk. To maintain an adequate androgenic effect 250 mg IM every 3-4 wk. Infertility: 50 mg IM every 2 wk for 90 days. Potency disorder: 100 mg IM once a wk. Continue treatment with 100 mg IM. Then 50 mg IM every 2-4 wk. Male climacteric: 50-100 mg IM every 2-3 wk. Repeat 6-8 wk courses at 4 wk intervals are recommended. Children: Not recommended.

Administration

IM: Warm injection to room temperature and shaking vial will help redissolve crystals that have formed after storage. Administer by deep IM injection into the upper outer quadrant of the gluteus maximus. Stability: Store at room temperature.

Adverse Effects

Female: Amenorrhoea and other menstrual irregularities. Male: Gynaecomastia, excessive frequency and duration of penile erections, inhibition of testicular function, testicular atrophy, impotence.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Contraindications: Carcinoma of the male breast or prostate, hypercalcaemia, impaired liver function, pregnancy, lactation. Precautions: Cardiac, hepatic or renal insufficiency, epilepsy, migraine, hypertension. Large and repeated doses in puberty may cause premature epiphyseal closure and stop linear growth. Hepatic adenocarcinoma may develop with prolonged use. In women high doses long term therapy produces virilism including irreversible voice deepening.

Interactions

In diabetic patients the metabolic effect of androgen may decrease blood glucose and insulin or hypoglycaemic agent requirements.

Pharmacokinetics

Metabolism: Skin, liver and urogenital tract. Half-life elimination: 7-9 days. Excretion: Urine (90%). Faeces (6%).
