Terbinafine, Oral
Antifungal, Systemic · Allylamine antifungal
Indications
Fungal infections of the skin, hair and nails including dermatophytes and yeast infections of the skin.
Dosage
Adults: 250 mg once daily. The duration of treatments: Tinea pedis: 2-6 wk. Tinea corporis, cruris: 2-4 wk. Cutaneous candidiasis: 2-4 wk. Onychomycosis: 6 wk-3 mth. Children: Not recommended.
Adverse Effects
Gastrointestinal symptoms, skin reactions, taste disturbance, hepatobiliary dysfunction, haematological disorders, anorexia, headache, arthralgia, myalgia.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to terbinafine. Chronic or active liver disease, severe renal impairment (CrCl <50 mL/min). Precautions: Stable chronic liver dysfunction or impaired renal function, psoriasis, lupus erythematosus. Perform LFTs before and during therapy, discontinue if hepatotoxicity develops.
Interactions
Cyclosporin, tolbutamide, oral contraceptives, CYP inducers or inhibitors incl cimetidine, fluconazole, ketoconazole, rifampicin, amiodarone, CYP2D6 substrates incl TCADs, B-blockers, SSRIs, MAOIs, antiarrhythmics, caffeine.
Advice to Patient
Take with or without meals. Take at regular intervals, as scheduled. Contact prescriber if there is no improvement or worsening of condition. Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better. Avoid alcohol intake during therapy.

Effective half-life: Children: 27-31 hrs. Adults: Approx. 36 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: Children and Adults: Within 2 hrs. Excretion: Urine (80%). Faeces (20%).
